My Target Scores!

Yesterday, I took my daughter out for the afternoon and we ended up at Target at Desert Ridge. I always enjoy wandering the clearance aisles looking for something I can't pass up.

I needed baseball card sleeves for my new coupon organization project and found a pack of 65 sheets for $9.77, that's cheaper than walmart and I think they are better quality.

I then decided to check and see if I could find one of the few Tag Reader Systems that have been clearanced to $12.98 due to some packaging changes. Good Deal Gal lives very close to me and I figured she had checked the Targets near us. By the grace of God, I found one behind the regularly priced units. I asked an employee if there were more and after checking his system, they had negative 6 of these left - I totally lucked out! Plus I was able to use the $10 off coupon to get this $49 system for $2.48! Yippee!

And, I found a Travel size Hungry Hungry Hippo game. It's priced at $4.99 and there is a $4 off coupon making this item just $.99. This will be a great addition for my gift closet! FYI, these were located in the luggage aisle and not in the toy section.

Let me know if you are successful in finding either of these items and the store you found them at.

How do the flu, strep throat, & stockpiling have to do with each other?

Edited: We've now confirmed that it's definitely not the swine flu - just a really bad case of strep throat!

I'm glad you asked because I would not have known before this morning.

Today has not exactly worked out had we had planned. My husband was supposed to come home from work this morning, we were supposed to pack up the van and head to our friend's home, and we were supposed to spend the weekend in the cool mountains of Pinetop some dear friends. Not so much...

Instead, my hubby got an itchy throat yesterday morning. By the end of the day, he was sent home sick from work (and this guy absolutely loves his job!) and went to the Minute Clinic at CVS to discover that he has strep throat and possibly the swine flu!!! I feel so terrible just looking at the pain he's in - I couldn't imagine just being him :( I've been praying for him all day long and I guess there's a reason why he was supposed to have his next shift off work so that his body can heal.

But there were a few silver linings of the day. Because I've learned the art of stockpiling, I have a box full of medicines that I've gotten for free or almost free. Our family doesn't get sick (in the normal sense) very often so we don't take many over the counter drugs. I've picked them up when they are free or money makers, but that's about it. This morning I was very grateful for that stockpile.

When my hubby came home, he was given the recommendation to take Tylenol Cold & Flu for the flu symptoms, a liquid cocktail of Maalox & liquid Benadryl to aid the sore throat, and Chloraseptic spray if above didn't work. Because I just happened to have all of these in my stockpile I was able to save about $25 in medicine that I would have purchased for him! Thank you, Jesus!

He also had a prescription for penicillin that he dropped at the pharmacy. When I picked up his prescription at CVS, I had a coupon from Safeway for $30 with a new/transferred script so I was able to profit $20 (in the form of a CVS gift card) after paying our co-pay. Another huge praise as this gift card will probably last me another 9+ months at CVS!

I write this post to ask you to keep my husband in your prayers but also as a reminder of how helpful and cost effective stockpiling can be! Sickness is obviously something that none of us can plan for, however if we can try to be prepared when it's not the heat of the moment, there can be significant savings!

Oh, and the answer to the question how do these things relate to each other = significant cost savings, even profit! And just to be clear, I don't recommend anyone trying to get sick for these cost savings, definitely not worth the sacrifice on the body!

Adoption Update - Home Study Complete!

I apologize for the limited postings the past few days. We've been finishing up the final steps of our home-study for our adoption and it seems like so many things that we have to finish, specifically our "Dear Birthparent" letter. We are very excited that the "administrative process" is now complete and once we finish our letter, it is entirely out of our hands. For those of you that have joined us recently, my husband and I decided to move forward with adoption in April due to circumstances surrounding my Crohn's disease - see my previous post here. We're using Christian Family Care Agency and love that we get to approach this event with a Christ centered organization - there is such a peace about that!

God is certainly teaching me to rely entirely on him as there is absolutely nothing that anyone of us can do to influence the timing from here on. I'm such a planner and like everything in life to be organized so God's definitely got a sense of humor putting our family on this track! All we can do is pray for our birth-parents and pray for our child and wait for a phone call from our case worker. It's such a comfort to know that the Lord already has our child chosen and we can't wait to meet him or her. My 3 year old is so excited to have a sibling and talks about it all the time. In fact, when our case worker left on Thursday, Kylie started to cry. I asked why she was crying and she responded, "Where is my baby sister?" It broke my heart because she thought that Renee was bringing our child to us at that time. Oh, the sweetness of children. No wonder they are so precious to the Lord!

We sincerely thank you for your thoughts and prayers as we go through this process and look forward to whatever is in store for us. There is no way to know how long we will wait as it could be 2 days, 2 weeks, 2 months, or 2 years. All we know is that we will have an infant (boy or girl) most likely from Arizona. We've got a significant amount of money to raise and we have some great fund raising ideas in store, so stay tuned as I share details. Believe me, it will be worth participating! God bless and thanks for sharing this exciting time with our family!

Want to get rid of junk mail?!?

I hate getting junk mail and telemarketing phone calls so if there is anything I can do prevent either of these as much as possible, I'm going to try. I was recently reading Woman's Day and saw a great article on reducing junk mail. Hopefully these tips will simplify your life and reduce the ridiculous amount of waste that is thrown away from unwanted mail every day across the nation!

1. Get on the National Do Not Call Registry www.donotcall.gov

2. Register to be excluded from all credit card & insurance offers www.optoutprescreen.com or call 1-888-567-8688

3. Register to be excluded from all catalogs, magazine offers, & circulars at www.dmachoice.org or call 212-768-7277 ext.1500

4. Opt out of all phone, mail & email that comes from Acxiom US at www.acxiom.com/opt-out-request-form or 1-877-774-2094 ext.5

5. Choose which catalogs you want to receive from www.Catalogchoice.org

My Fry's Shopping Trip

I did a quick shopping trip to Fry's this morning and was finally able to pull out my camera before putting everything away. It's always fun to get a visual of how much I'm able to get by matching store sales with coupons. A lot of this will go to the Neighborhood Ministries collection at our church and we're stocked up on mustard, ketchup, and seasonings!

My original bill would have been $159 but after using my VIP card and coupons, I walked out paying just $34 and that included $11 for a case of beer!
